About Us

RAICES Argentinean and Uruguayan Folk Dance Group is a non-profit organization registered with the Department of Fair Trading which begun activities in 2000. We currently have adults, young people and children in the group. Our activities include performing the Argentinean and Uruguayan dances at community events organized by various councils in Sydney, clubs, multicultural events, private celebrations, etc. The performances might include a combination of folk dances, drums, foot work and "boleadoras" show.

RAICES has received  a number of awards such as the Best Folk Group award at the Holroyd City 'Built Around People' festival and performed numerous times at the Fiesta Carnival organized by the Sydney Harbour Forshore Authority at Darling Harbour, the Rugby World Cup and others. The Group has also performed in Canberra, Melbourne and Adelaide.

In 2004 Raices travelled to Argentina and Uruguay to compete in Danzamerica, Carlos Paz, Cordoba. We are humbled and pleased to say that the trip to Argentina was very successful as the group won 7 medals and two trophies. It was a surprise to us as our kids are born in Australia and were competing with other kids who were raised in the Argentinean culture.

In 2008, Raices Group Director, Eduardo Menendez, received a Certificate of Acknowledgement from the Community Relations Commision in recognition for his contribution to volunteerism.
